Who should attend?

Anyone who works, or wants to work as a professional lifeguard at a beach. The beach environment has specific risks and lifeguards, therefore, need to be trained specifically for these. They must show a higher level of fitness and endurance than a pool lifeguard to ensure that they can deal with the additional difficulties posed by the open sea.

What will they learn?

Students gain the skills and knowledge to deal with emergencies that may occur in the open sea and at the beach. They learn the principles of effective Beach Lifeguarding, diverse rescue techniques, how to save lives and prevent further injuries. They will gain confidence to use these skills through practical application on themselves, manikins in pool and beach environment.

Update for candidates that hold a valid Highfield L2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding


Continuous assessment during the course, plus a final independent assessment (practical and multiple choice) where candidates must show competence in applying beach lifeguard skills promptly, safely and effectively.

Certificate and Validity

Internationally recognised Beach Lifeguard qualification from Highfield Body for Compliance is valid for 2 years.

Entry requirement

Participants should have Basic English skills and very good swimming abilities. They must be able to swim 400m in 8 min and dive 2m deep in the sea. Minimum age: 16 years.
